Majima-Centric Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii Unveiled at RGG Summit

The upcoming Yakuza game, titled Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, featuring the unpredictable Goro Majima battling pirates, was announced at the September 2024 RGG Summit by Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio and Sega.

This installment appears to have Majima on a quest for lost treasure, potentially incorporating ship combat elements reminiscent of both Yakuza and Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag. Set to launch on February 28, 2025, the game was introduced through an engaging reveal trailer showing Majima washed ashore on Rich Island, Hawaii, in a disheveled state, aided by a child and a pet tiger. Majima himself narrates the trailer, reflecting on how he ended up on the beach six months earlier.

The narrative will likely connect to events from Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, with Majima confronting the fallout from Ichiban Kasuga’s entanglements with the cult of Palekana on Nele Island. The footage hinted at Majima taking on the role of a pirate captain.

Gameplay snippets showcased Majima battling across the Hawaiian map introduced in Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, as well as on ships and new locales. Players can utilize either the Mad Dog Style or the new Sea Dog Style, and for the first time in the series, jumping mechanics will be available.

Fans have eagerly awaited this announcement, especially following the release of the expansive Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth earlier this year. RGG Studio is known for its prolific output; in the last five years alone, it has delivered numerous titles, including remasters, new entries, and spin-offs.

Anticipation surrounding this new title has been high since Sega teased the RGG Summit in August, with speculation ranging from a mainline Yakuza/Like a Dragon entry to spin-offs or remakes.

In a glowing 10/10 review of the previous game, Islandgamer remarked: “Sprawling, enthralling, and packed with dynamic brawling, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth isn’t just the best turn-based entry; it’s one of the greatest games in the series.”
