Upcoming Starfield Update to Introduce Native DLSS Support and Various Enhancements
Starfield is on the verge of a significant upgrade with an imminent Steam Beta patch. This update, set to roll out next week, brings highly anticipated official compatibility with Nvidia's Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) technology. Bethesda Game Studios recently announced on X/Twitter that they've been diligently working on post-launch improvements for Starfield. This forthcoming update will initially debut in beta form, exclusively accessible to Steam users before becoming available to a broader audience, including all PC players and Xbox Series X/S users.
Bethesda has officially confirmed that the forthcoming update will bring long-awaited Nvidia DLSS support, as well as the addition of HDR controls, alongside various optimizations and enhancements. The highlight of this update undoubtedly centers around the inclusion of DLSS. In a separate announcement, Bethesda also disclosed their plans to introduce support for FidelityFX Super Resolution 3 in a future update.
Initial speculation arose regarding Starfield's DLSS support, given the prior announcement of AMD as the "exclusive PC partner for Starfield." The uncertainty and rumors have since been validated, as Starfield initially only offered two upscaling options: FSR 2 and FidelityFX Contrast Adaptive Sharpening (CAS).
DLSS has consistently ranked as one of the most requested features for Starfield, especially within the PC gaming community. Modders wasted no time in incorporating DLSS into the game, but a certain modder faced criticism for putting a more advanced Starfield DLSS 3 mod behind a $5 monthly Patreon paywall.
Following the release of Starfield, Bethesda made an official announcement regarding the addition of DLSS support, yet they have not clarified whether DLSS 2 or DLSS 3 will be integrated into the game. The latter choice would be somewhat limiting, as DLSS 3 exclusively caters to the GeForce RTX 40 series graphics cards.
Despite the absence of official DLSS support, Starfield has been a remarkable success for Bethesda, boasting 10 million players within just three weeks of launch and becoming the most significant debut in Bethesda Game Studios' history. It's clear that Starfield played a pivotal role in Microsoft's Q1 2024 earnings, as recent reports indicate a 13% increase in revenue for Xbox content and services compared to the previous quarter.
