Interview with Amos Yeo from HoYoverse at HoYoFest 2024 Vietnam

Vietnam has become one of the key markets in Southeast Asia for miHoYo games. Notably, HoYoFest has been held four times in Vietnam over the past four years, with the 2024 event being the biggest ever. Islandgamer brings you an exclusive interview with Amos Yeo, Senior Global PR Manager for Southeast Asia at HoYoverse, the company representing miHoYo in global game publishing.

Hoang Phong, Editor-in-Chief @ Islandgamer, and Amos Yeo, Senior Global PR Manager for Southeast Asia @ HoYoverse.

What’s the most exciting feature of Hoyo Fest 2024 that’s likely to draw in fans?

I think ultimately people want to come together to celebrate and connect. For us, HoYoFest is essentially a service to serve the community, where people come to meet, connect, and experience HoYo games.

Another thing is that the official merchandise might be cheaper here than if bought elsewhere. We do this because we want to offer the best possible experience for the audience in Vietnam.

As a representative monitoring HoYoFest in Vietnam, what are your thoughts on the Vietnamese community?

I mean, the fact that on Friday afternoon, they came to watch and participate in the live stream shows their enthusiasm for HoYo games. Many of them took part in cosplay, and it's amazing to see how dedicated the fans are, preparing outfits just to celebrate our games.

In reality, operating a business in the gaming industry in Vietnam is quite challenging and faces many barriers. What are your plans to ensure that HoYo can operate smoothly here?

For us, it’s been quite smooth. I don’t feel HoYoverse has any issues or troubles when entering the Vietnamese market.

With technology evolving and new trends emerging in gaming design, what is miHoYo planning to do for future game development?

We don’t have any specific plans for game design right now, but we ensure that when a new game is released, we will provide the best experience and technical quality to make players happy with the results we deliver.

The gaming industry in China is becoming more developed, with upcoming releases like Black Myth: Wukong and future titles like Where Wind Meet and Phantom Blade Zero, indicating a shift toward more AAA titles for PC and consoles, rather than just focusing on mobile. How does miHoYo plan to approach this trend in the future? Will there be a focus on producing games on an AAA scale?

MiHoYo's games are already available on PC, consoles, and mobile devices. I think all of our games can be played across platforms, and accounts can sync between them, so it works that way. We still follow this approach, ensuring cross-platform compatibility before moving toward an AAA scale. Since our games can already be played on almost any platform, we don’t see the need to develop specifically for PC or consoles like traditional AAA titles.
