Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons Remake Preview – An Amazing Adventure Gets a Modern Facelift

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons was initially released in 2013 and captured the hearts of the growing indie community thanks to the efforts of Xbox Live Arcade. It took the game design of controlling two characters at the same time to solve puzzles and navigate environments and paired it with an unforgettable and emotional adventure. The themes of family, loyalty, humor, and courage are found in almost every scene, and the upcoming release of Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons Remake only serves to enhance that core experience.

After playing the opening hour of Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons Remake, it’s evident that the developer doesn’t wish to change much of what Starbreeze Studios and director Josef Fares created. It mirrors the original identically in terms of navigation and puzzle-solving. However, I’d go as far as to say the performance enhancement of the controls and even the camera have been widely improved to make exploration a much easier experience. I appreciated this effort as it allowed me the chance to revisit a few of the more light-hearted scenes of the two brothers interacting with townspeople and avoiding detection that I have fond memories of.

The developer’s dedication to preserving the essence of the original game is evident, making the remake a respectful homage.

The reality is Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons is over 10 years old now, and updates to the controls and camera movement are needed to bring this game to a modern standard. However, the system of controlling both brothers at the same time still takes some getting used to. Traversal seems a bit easy in terms of having the option to multi-task and divide specific tasks amongst the brothers. Still, this only works if you have a knack for controlling the characters simultaneously. Again, the added option to adjust the camera and the refinements made to some of the environments created a much more user-friendly experience.

Visual Upgrades and Immersive Environments in Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons Remake

On a side note, this isn’t a game to rush through, and I should stress that even during my time playing, I found myself just pushing through these environments that I’ve seen before. However, early on, I forced myself to pause and take in the work that this team has done to the environments. It’s almost night and day when comparing it to the original. The textures, townspeople, and fauna are all complicated by the updated lighting. It truly immerses you in the world, which is great for those who have yet to experience this adventure.

The core story of Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons deeply resonates, expertly immersing players in a tale of family and hardship.

The updates to graphics and controls give you a chance to experience the gravity of this narrative. The player has to come to terms with this truth as they play through the adventure. The core story follows these brothers as they search for a way to save their ill father, but throughout the game, you understand the many hardships that this family has endured, and your goals begin to align with there’s. It’s expert immersion and one that forces the player into a vulnerable state.

Anticipating the Definitive Experience with Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons Remake

Given the attention to detail of this remake effort, I didn’t find anything outside of the frustration of getting used to the controls annoying. I did notice some overall issues with performance during cut scenes, but the build is not reflective of the final product, so I’ll wait to see if these will still be present later. Other than that, this seems to be the definitive way that gamers will experience the timeless adventure of Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, and I’m so happy that new players have the chance to play it.
